1 October International Coffee Day

Coffee solves your day.
HAL solves your business.

Stressed? Coffee. Headache? Coffee. Meeting friends, first date, 6 AM start or 9 PM deadline? Coffee. Today we raise a cup to the drink that fits every moment, and tell you why our name means the same thing.

A short story of coffee

From a curious goat to your morning meeting

Coffee is one of the few things that travelled from our part of the world to every office on the planet. Here is the five-minute version.

The legend

In the Ethiopian highlands, a goatherd called Kaldi notices his goats dancing after nibbling red berries from a shrub. Legend or not, the berries were coffee cherries.

1400s · Yemen

Sufis in Yemen roast and brew the beans to stay awake for night prayers. The port of Mocha ships Yemeni coffee to the world and lends its name to a drink.

1500s · Arabia

Coffee spreads through Makkah, Cairo and Istanbul. Coffee houses become the place to talk, trade, play chess and share news.

1600s → today

Merchants carry it to Europe, then planters to Asia and the Americas. Today coffee is grown in about 70 countries, and is one of the most traded farm products on earth.

Even the word is ours: قهوة qahwa→ kahve→ koffie→ coffee
Know your beans

The two coffees behind almost every cup

There are over a hundred coffee species, but two of them fill nearly every cup you have ever had.

Arabica

Coffea arabica

The fussy one. Grows high up (often above 1,000 m), needs cool nights and careful farming. Born in Ethiopia, made famous in Yemen.

Sweetness Acidity Caffeine Bitterness
  • Roughly 60% of the world's coffee
  • Notes of fruit, chocolate, flowers
  • Oval bean with a curvy S-shaped crease
  • The base of most specialty coffee you buy in Riyadh and Jeddah

Robusta

Coffea canephora

The tough one. Grows lower and hotter, shrugs off pests, and carries a stronger punch. Big in Vietnam, Brazil and Indonesia.

Sweetness Acidity Caffeine Bitterness
  • Roughly 40% of the world's coffee
  • About twice the caffeine of Arabica
  • Rounder bean with a straight crease
  • Gives espresso blends their thick crema and instant coffee its kick
Saudi and coffee

In Saudi, coffee is not a drink. It is a welcome.

Long before flat whites, Saudi homes greeted every guest with قهوة سعودية: light, golden qahwa scented with cardamom, poured from a dallah into a finjan and served with dates. Today the Kingdom also runs on specialty coffee, from Jazan's own farms to a roastery on every street.

2015Arabic coffee is added to UNESCO's list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, with Saudi Arabia among the nominating countries.
2022Saudi Arabia celebrates the “Year of Saudi Coffee” to honour its coffee heritage.
Khawlani beansGrown on the terraced mountains of Jazan. The knowledge of growing them joined UNESCO's heritage list in 2022.
Drive-through nationHere the best coffee meeting room often has four wheels. Order, sip, solve, drive.
Majlis manners: the host pours with the left hand, the guest takes the finjan with the right. Cups are filled only a little, so they can be refilled often. Done? Give the cup a gentle shake.
Meet HAL's coffee council

Our founders take coffee very seriously

Some companies are built on coffee. Ours was also built by two people who will judge yours.

HAL CANTEEN GRIND 2.4 18.0 g 00:27 HAL 18 g in · 36 g out · 27 s
Co-founder & CTO

Azher, the office barista

Azher brought his own grinder to the office. Not a kettle. A grinder. In the HAL canteen he weighs the beans, sets the grind size, starts a timer and watches the shot like it is a production deploy.

  • Weighs every dose to a tenth of a gram
  • Changes the grind when the shot runs a few seconds fast
  • Treats a sour espresso like a bug report
That same obsession with getting the details right is how HAL's engineering team builds software.
DRIVE THRU ☕ MENUEspressoLungo ★Cappuccino ★Flat whiteQahwa One cappuccino. Properly strong, please.
Co-founder & CEO

Umar, the drive-through critic

Umar has probably rated more Saudi drive-throughs than most food bloggers. From a lungo to a cappuccino, he has one rule: do it right. A watery cup is not a small mistake to him. It is a personal offence, even when it comes from the world's most famous green logo.

  • Knows which drive-through pulls the best lungo on his route
  • Will send back a cappuccino that tastes like warm milk
  • Believes a good coffee, like good software, should never be watered down
That refusal to accept “good enough” is exactly why he started HAL.
Wait, what does HAL mean?

It is not an English name. It is an Arabic word.

حل
HAL · /ḥall/ · solution

Before HAL, our CEO Umar ran a business of his own. Every software vendor told him the same thing: “Change the way you work. This is best practice.” Again and again, the “best practice” turned out to be nothing more than a limit inside the software. His team bent their processes to fit the system, and the work got harder, not easier.

So HAL was built on one belief: businesses should not bend to software. Software should bend to help the business.

Just like coffee meets you where you are, HAL fits around how your company already works, and then makes each day simpler, cleaner and faster.

☕ CoffeePicks you up in the morning, calms you down at night, brings friends together and fits every situation.
حل HALRuns your accounting, sales, people, projects and service, and fits every business situation, from the morning rush to month-end.
